Say this
- Drink water every hour, even when you are not thirsty. When the WBGT reaches 31°C, MOM requires at least hourly drinks and recommends 300 ml an hour or more for hard work (MOM heat stress measures).
- Cool water must be close to where you work. If a water point is empty or warm, tell me straight away.
- Bring your own bottle and fill it at every break. Sweet drinks and energy drinks do not replace water.
- At 32°C WBGT, heavy work stops for at least 10 minutes every hour. At 33°C it is at least 15 minutes. These are MOM requirements, not favours.
- Take your break in the shade or the rest shelter. A break in the sun does not cool you down.
- Check your urine colour. Dark yellow means you need more water now.
- If you feel dizzy, sick or have a headache, stop and tell me. Nobody gets marked down for resting.
Ask the crew
- How often should you drink water today?
- Where is the nearest cool water point to where you work?
- What is the minimum break at 32°C WBGT for heavy work?
- What does dark urine tell you?
Show them
- The water points and where spare cups or refills are kept.
- The shaded rest area and the WBGT reading board.
- The urine colour chart in the toilets.
