Say this

  1. Check the speed. The disc must be rated for at least the grinder's maximum speed. Both are marked (CCOHS).
  2. Use the right disc for the job. A grinding disc is not a cutting disc. Never fit a disc that is too big for the guard.
  3. Inspect the disc before you fit it. Throw away any disc that is cracked, chipped, damp or past its date.
  4. The guard stays on and sits between you and the disc. Never use a grinder with a missing or damaged guard (CCOHS).
  5. Stand to one side when you start it and let it run up to speed. Keep others out of line with the disc (US OSHA).
  6. Hold it with both hands. Clamp the work. Never clamp the grinder in a vice to hold work by hand.
  7. Sparks start fires. Clear flammables first and get a hot work permit where the site needs one. The law requires heat and ignition sources to be kept apart from flammable materials (WSH (General Provisions) Regs, reg 37). Wear a face shield over safety glasses.

Ask the crew

  1. How do you know a disc is safe for this grinder?
  2. Where do you stand when you start the grinder?
  3. What must you clear before grinding near the formwork store?
