Say this

  1. Every lift today follows the lifting plan. If something changes, we stop and review it before carrying on.
  2. Know your role. Only the appointed rigger rigs the load. Only the appointed signalman gives signals.
  3. Check slings and shackles before every lift. No tag, no certificate, damaged wire or webbing: it goes in the reject bin.
  4. If we do not know the weight, we do not lift. Tell the operator the weight every time.
  5. Never stand or walk under a suspended load. Use tag lines. Keep your hands off a moving load.
  6. Stay out of the barricaded zone unless you are part of the lift.
  7. Anyone can call stop. If you see something wrong, shout stop and raise your hand. We sort it out after the load is safe.

Ask the crew

  1. Who is the lifting supervisor and the signalman today?
  2. What do you do with a sling that has no tag?
  3. Where is the exclusion zone for this lift?
  4. How close can the crane get to a live overhead power line?

Show them

  • Hold up a good sling and a rejected one. Point out the tag, SWL marking and the damage.
  • Walk the lift path and landing area, and point out the barricade line.
  • Run through the stop signal and the agreed radio channel with the operator.
