Say this

  1. Only drive a MEWP if you have passed the course for that type and been shown this model. Moving it a few metres still counts.
  2. Do the pre-use check every time. If something is broken, do not go up. Tag it and tell me.
  3. Look at the ground before you move. Drain covers, soft ground and trench edges can tip the machine.
  4. Clip your harness to the anchor point in the basket with the short lanyard. Keep your feet on the floor. Never stand on the rails.
  5. Look up before you raise. Move slowly near beams and pipes. If you get pinned, your body can press the controls and the machine keeps going.
  6. Never climb out of the basket at height. It is not a lift between floors.
  7. Before we start, we agree who lowers you if something goes wrong. That person must know the ground controls.

Ask the crew

  1. Where is the anchor point in this basket, and which lanyard do you use?
  2. What do you do if the pre-use check finds a fault?
  3. Who is our ground person today, and where are the emergency lowering controls?
  4. What overhead hazards are in today's work area?

Show them

  • The maker's anchor point and the correct short lanyard, clipped on.
  • The ground controls and emergency lowering on today's machine.
  • The overhead beams, pipes or cables in the work area.
