Say this
- No phone use while driving a vehicle, forklift or any mobile plant. WSH Council guidance says drivers should not use phones at the wheel (WSH Council traffic safety guidelines).
- If you must take a call while driving, stop in a safe parking spot first, or let a passenger take it.
- Do not use a phone while operating a machine, a crane or a tool. Stop the work, make it safe, then answer.
- Walking and texting do not mix. Step off the walkway into a safe spot before you look at your screen.
- Never stand on a traffic route or under a lift to use your phone.
- Keep phones away from refuelling and other flammable areas. WSH Council lists them as an ignition source during refuelling (WSH Council forklift guidelines).
- Signallers and banksmen talk on the radio, not the phone, during a lift.
Ask the crew
- When can a driver use a phone?
- Where should you stand to take a call on site?
- Why are phones banned in the refuelling area?
- What do you do if your phone rings while you operate a machine?
Show them
- The safe spots on site where people can stop to use a phone.
- The refuelling area and its no-phone sign.
- The radio channels for lifting and traffic control.
