Say this

  1. Shout a warning and move people away. Do not walk through the spill. Stop the source only if you safely can.
  2. If the liquid is flammable, remove ignition sources. Stop hot work, switch off sparking tools and keep phones away.
  3. Check the SDS before you touch it. Section 6 tells you how to clean it up.
  4. Put on goggles and chemical gloves before you go near it. Use a respirator if the vapour is strong.
  5. Dike the spill with absorbent socks, then soak it up. For solvents, use plastic scoops and never a vacuum cleaner (WSH Council flammable materials guidelines).
  6. Bag or drum the waste, seal it and label it. Then tell me so we can report and restock.
  7. If it is big, spreading or you are not sure, leave it. Evacuate and call for help.

Ask the crew

  1. What is the first thing you do when you see a spill?
  2. Where is the nearest spill kit?
  3. Why must you never use a vacuum cleaner on a solvent spill?
  4. When do you leave a spill and call for help?

Show them

  • The spill kit contents and how to use the absorbent socks.
  • Section 6 of the SDS for a chemical we use on site.
  • The labelled waste drum for used absorbent.
