Say this

  1. Use the walkways and crossings, every time. A shortcut across the yard is how people get hit.
  2. Assume the driver cannot see you. If you cannot see the driver's eyes, he cannot see you either.
  3. Stay out of reversing areas. When you hear a reversing alarm, look and move away.
  4. Only trained, authorised operators drive forklifts. If you are not authorised, do not touch the keys.
  5. Drivers wear the seat belt, carry no passengers and keep the forks low when travelling.
  6. Banksmen stand where the driver can see them and out of the vehicle's path. If the driver loses sight of you, he stops.
  7. Report near misses with vehicles straight away. They tell us where the next collision will be.

Ask the crew

  1. Where are the blind corners on our site?
  2. What do you do when you hear a reversing alarm behind you?
  3. Where should a banksman never stand?
  4. Who is allowed to drive the forklifts here?

Show them

  • The marked walkways and crossings on the way to today's work area.
  • The blind spots around a parked forklift. Have someone sit in the seat while others walk around it.
  • The forklift pre-operation checklist and where the keys are kept.
