Say this
- If you can do the job from the ground, do it from the ground. Use the pole, lower the item, or bring it down.
- Any edge where you could fall 2 metres or more gets a guard-rail or a cover. No rail, no work.
- Never lift a cover or remove a rail without telling me. When you finish, put it back before you walk away.
- Check your harness before you put it on. Look for cuts, burns, broken stitching and a missing label. If in doubt, swap it.
- Clip on to a proper anchor point or lifeline. A guard-rail or a pipe will not hold you.
- Keep off fragile roof sheets and skylights. They look solid. They are not.
- If someone falls and hangs in a harness, every minute counts. Today the rescuer is (name), and the kit is at (location).
Ask the crew
- What is the first question to ask before working at height?
- Where are the anchor points for today's job?
- What do you do if you find a floor opening without a cover?
- Who starts the rescue if someone falls today, and how?
Show them
- Do a harness check in front of the crew. Point out the labels, stitching and energy absorber.
- Walk them to the anchor points and show which ones are rated for fall arrest.
- Point out the nearest guard-rail and opening cover and explain who may move them.
