Say this
- Asbestos was used in buildings here until 1989. Old ceiling boards, roof sheets, pipe lagging, fire doors and gaskets can all contain it.
- You cannot tell asbestos by looking at it. Only a lab test can. If it is old and you are not sure, treat it as asbestos.
- This building has a survey. The marked areas on the drawing contain asbestos. Do not drill, cut or break anything in those areas.
- Only the approved removal contractor touches asbestos. It is not our job, even for one small board.
- If you find something suspicious, stop. Step back, keep others away, and tell me straight away.
- Never sweep or blow dust from suspect material. That puts the fibres in the air we all breathe.
- If you work inside an asbestos area, wear your fit-tested respirator and coveralls the whole time. Take them off only in the decontamination area.
Ask the crew
- Name three places in an old building where asbestos might be.
- You break a ceiling board and see grey fibrous material. What do you do?
- Who is allowed to remove asbestos on this site?
- Why can't we sweep up the dust?
Show them
- The survey drawing with the asbestos areas marked.
- The barricade, warning signs and decontamination unit, if removal is going on.
- How a fit-tested respirator should sit and seal on the face.
