Say this

  1. Keep walkways and stairs clear. Do not stack anything in passageways or traffic lanes. The law says stored goods must not block passageways, lighting, machinery or fire-fighting equipment (WSH (General Provisions) Regs, reg 24).
  2. Coil up cables and hoses and hang them up or put them away. A cable across a walkway is a trip waiting to happen (WSH Council housekeeping guidelines).
  3. Clean up spills now, not tomorrow. Oil and water on a floor put people on their backs.
  4. Put tools back in their place. Count them. A missing tool may be sitting on a beam above someone's head.
  5. Keep materials away from edges and openings. They must not be stored where they could fall on people below (WSH Council housekeeping guidelines).
  6. Empty the waste bins and skips that are full. Rubbish piles feed fires.
  7. Before you leave, look back. Is the area safe for someone who did not see it today?

Ask the crew

  1. What must never be blocked by stored materials?
  2. What do you do with an extension lead at the end of the day?
  3. Why do we check edges and openings before we leave?

Show them

  • Walk the area together and fix three things in five minutes.
  • Show where cables, hoses and tools are stored at the end of the shift.
  • Point out the fire extinguisher and exit route and check they are clear.
