Say this

  1. Before you lift anything, ask if a trolley, jack or hoist can do it. If one is here, use it.
  2. Check the load first. Tip one corner to feel the weight. Look for sharp edges and loose contents.
  3. Clear your path before you pick anything up. Know where you will put it down.
  4. Stand close, bend your knees, keep your back straight. Hold the load tight against your body.
  5. Lift with your legs, slowly. Turn with your feet. Never twist at the waist with a load.
  6. If it is too heavy or awkward, get help. In a team lift, one person calls the lift and everyone moves together.
  7. If your back, shoulder or wrist aches, tell me today. We can change the job before it becomes an injury.

Ask the crew

  1. Which lift on this job do you find hardest?
  2. Where are the trolleys and lifting aids kept?
  3. What do you do with your feet when you need to turn with a load?
  4. Who calls the lift in a team lift, and what do they say?

Show them

  • Demonstrate the lifting steps with a real load from today's work.
  • Point out the trolleys, pallet jacks or hoists and how to use them.
  • Walk the carry route and point out trip hazards to keep clear.
