Say this

  1. If you have to shout to someone one arm's length away, the noise is too loud. Put on hearing protection.
  2. These are today's noisy areas and tools. The signs at the entrances mean protection goes on before you walk in.
  3. Roll the foam plug thin. Pull your ear up and back. Push the plug in and hold it while it expands.
  4. Keep protection on the whole time you are in the noise. A few minutes without it undoes most of the protection.
  5. Ear muffs need a tight seal. Caps, hoods and thick glasses arms break the seal.
  6. If a machine gets louder than usual, tell me. It often means it needs repair.
  7. Go to your yearly hearing test. It catches damage early, while we can still stop it getting worse.

Ask the crew

  1. Which tools on this job are loud enough to need protection?
  2. How do you know if your earplug is fitted properly?
  3. What signs tell you that you are entering a noisy zone?
  4. When did you last have a hearing test?

Show them

  • Point out the hearing protection signs and the edges of the noisy zones.
  • Where to collect new earplugs and replacement muff cushions.
