Say this

  1. Wear the PPE the task needs for the whole job. Most injuries happen in the minute you take it off.
  2. Check it before you put it on. Look for cracks in helmets, cuts in harness webbing and holes in gloves.
  3. If it fits badly, tell me. We have other sizes, and loose PPE does not protect you.
  4. Use the right type. A dust mask does nothing against fumes. Ask if you are not sure.
  5. Do not modify your PPE. No drilling helmets and no cutting glove fingers. It is against the law and it weakens the gear.
  6. If your harness stops a fall, it is finished. Hand it in, even if it looks fine.
  7. Store your PPE clean and dry, out of the sun and away from chemicals.

Ask the crew

  1. What PPE does your task need today?
  2. Show me how you check your helmet before you put it on.
  3. What do you do if you find a cut in your harness strap?
  4. Why is a dust mask no good for paint fumes?

Show them

  • How to do the two-finger fit test on a harness.
  • A damaged helmet or harness next to a good one, and the signs to look for.
  • Where spare PPE and other sizes are kept, and how to swap a damaged item.
